OSOP: Key to economic diversification – NEPC
The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) says the One State One Product (OSOP) programme is pivotal to the diversification of the country’s economy away from oil. The Executive Director/CEO of NEPC, Nonye Ayeni who disclosed this at the 2nd National Forum of the State Committees on Export Promotion (SCEP) in Abuja noted that it was a critical step in the collective effort to drive non-oil export development for inclusive economic growth.
The forum themed “The Role of SCEP in Fostering the Growth of Non-Oil Export in Nigeria” brought together Trade Commissioners, Permament Secretaries, Directors of Commerce, and other relevant stakeholders from across the 36 states and the FCT. At the syndicate sessions, trade experts made presentations and collectively reviewed how states can become active drivers of Nigeria’s non-oil export growth in alignment with President Bola Tinubu Renewed Hope Agenda.
The SCEP was established as a joint initiative between state governments and NEPC to develop and promote non-oil export at the sub-national level. The OSOP is designed to focus & harness each state’s competitive & comparative advantage in exportable goods and services. E.g. Kaduna State: Ginger (main product) & Soybean (alternative product), Kano State: Hibiscus & Sesame and Abia State: Leather & Garments.
Through OSOP, the Council’s provides technical support, capacity building, and market access facilitation to help states position these products for global competitiveness. The SCEP Forum is a strategic intervention to strengthen collaboration between NEPC, state govts & key institutions with the ultimate goal to encourage states to mainstream export promotion into their economic agenda.
As Nigeria strives to increase the export of Made-in-Nigeria products, boost Gross Domestic Products (GDP), the role of state government in achieving this objective is germane. At the NEPC, we remain committed to building institutional frameworks that empower every state to take ownership of its export narrative.
